“How many people should we include in this study?”

It’s one of the most common (and most debated) questions in UX research. And the honest answer most of us give is also the least satisfying one: it depends.

Sample size decisions are influenced by many factors - statistical significance, confidence levels, margins of error, timelines, resources, and the type of study you’re running. You’ll hear advice ranging from “5 users is enough” to “you need hundreds for reliable results,” which often leaves teams second-guessing their decisions.

The good news is that while there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, there is a clear, practical process for choosing a sample size that fits your goals and helps you make confident decisions.

About this event

In this workshop, we’ll break down how to determine the right sample size for your UX research studies without overcomplicating things or relying on guesswork.

You’ll learn when smaller sample sizes are appropriate, when larger ones are necessary, and how to explain and defend your choices to stakeholders. We’ll focus on practical decision-making, not academic theory, so you leave with a repeatable framework you can use in your day-to-day work.

We’ll also use Lyssna’s sample size calculator to walk through real examples and help you quickly determine the right number of participants for different study types and scenarios.

What you’ll learn

✔ Common approaches to determining sample size, including when statistical significance matters and when it doesn’t.

✔ How sample size differs for qualitative vs quantitative research.

✔ How to balance speed, confidence, and reliability in your research results.

✔ How to clearly explain and justify your sample size decisions to stakeholders.

✔ A practical decision framework you can reuse for future studies.

What we’ll do

✔ Break down common misconceptions about sample size in UX research.

✔ Walk through real examples of different study types and use cases.

✔ Use Lyssna’s sample size calculator to determine sample sizes based on study goals, timelines, and confidence needs
