We will discuss the recent research on problematic smartphone use (PSU) in teens, and its link to increased anxiety and depression. We will talk about ideas for managing smartphone habits, focusing on how too much screen time can affect teens’ mental health, including the signs that a teen may be struggling due to excessive screen use. Dr. Kalk will also discuss the neurodivergent teens and their challenges with screen time.

Dr. Nicky Kalk is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Addictions at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and a Visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London. She completed her PhD in Addiction Psychiatry at Imperial College London and has extensive experience in the assessment and management of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Dr. Kalk is particularly skilled in working with individuals who have co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She is also active in research, co-investigating national studies, and contributes to clinical education, teaching on the MSc. in Addictions course.
