This session reveals how Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) appears in teenagers and effective therapies for overcoming intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. Host Tara Dolby is joined by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Zöe Kindyis from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Dr. Kindyis, who specialises in OCD, will discuss what OCD is, its signs and symptoms, and how parents and carers can support teenagers in treating and managing the condition.


OCD – How to help, support & make a difference

Teenagers' attitudes towards pressure, especially at school, ranging from negativity, lack of motivation, and inconsistent study habits to perfectionism and overworking, can significantly impact their mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Parental pressure, although well-intentioned, can harm self-esteem if parents' definitions of success differ from their child's. Remember, your child is their own person.

Cathy Ellott, Head of Putney & Streatham High, and Dr. Sarah-Jane Knight will discuss how to build an environment for teens that balances support and challenge and fosters a healthy attitude towards learning. They will explore how schools and homes promoting realistic, open communication, emotional support, and a balanced approach to studying and results, can help teens focus on their own expectations and abilities, and build their resilience through trial and error.


How Parents Can Help Teens deal with School Pressure

We all know that some conversations with your teenager are essential, but how can you get your message across when your teen doesn’t want to listen, no matter how hard you try?

The teenage years can be both glorious and painful, as you watch your children emerge into their newly formed adult selves. Don’t lose hope, with the help of Dr. Bettina Hohnen, there is a way to reach them, even if when they try to shut you down.

Bettina, co-author of the acclaimed book, "How to Have Incredible Conversations with your Child" will share her advice on how to encourage your teen to listen to adult perspective and offer some tips and hints on how to build better relationships with your teens through the art of conversation.

Often children and young people with autism face increased challenges in the teenage years which makes them much more anxious about school which can lead to Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA). We will talk to Child and Educational Psychologist, Mollie Higgins about the connection between autism and anxiety, which may lead to EBSA and what you can do to support your autistic teen.

Dr. Alex Doig is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist specialising in CAMHS Tier 3 within the NHS in South West London, with expert insight into Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in teens.

In this session, we will discuss what ADHD looks like in teenagers, exploring its definition, common symptoms, and the diagnostic process. We will also discuss conditions that often co-occur with ADHD, available treatment options, and strategies to support your teen in managing their condition and moving forward positively.

This session will help you understand and explore different approaches to dealing with online bullying, inspired by Trisha Prabhu, whose experiences led her to invent ReThink™, a technology that detects offensive content and encourages users to rethink sending it. We will discuss the underlying causes of cyberbullying, how AI could impact a young person's online experience, and we will explore practical, proactive measures that parents, educators, and caregivers can take to create a safer and more supportive online environment for children and young adults. The session will draw on insights from Trisha’s extensive experience, including her TED talks and her book, “ReThink the Internet,” a guide for young people navigating the online landscape.


Understanding Teens and their Online World – Essential knowledge for every Parent 

Teens are at a complicated crossroads in life, gaining independence but often lacking the judgement to make adult decisions. Social and internal pressures they feel themselves , along with the rise in negative body image amplified by social media, can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth, which is perhaps why rates of disordered eating among children and adolescents are increasing. Early intervention is key in helping teens with eating issues, but often help can be hard to access. By understanding the signs, symptoms, and treatment options for teen eating disorders, you’ll be better equipped to get your teen the help they need.

In this session with Dr Tamasine Black, we will explore these unique challenges and provide strategies to improve coping mechanisms, resilience, and connection with peers. Stay Smart: Your Guide to Drugs, Alcohol, Vaping and Party Safety

As the festive season approaches, the pressure to be sociable and take risks increases for teenagers and young adults. While it is normal for teens to experiment and test boundaries, for those who are experimenting to find relief from feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, irritability, and negative thoughts, it can lead to quicker addictions and worsening mental health over time, particularly because their brains are still developing.

We will be talking to Fiona Spargo-Mabbs about how to guide teens toward making safer and smarter decisions regarding their drug and alcohol choices.


Underage Drinking and Substance Misuse in Teens

The festive season often brings an expectation to feel joyful and to celebrate with loved ones, but for teens already facing mental health challenges, this time can be particularly overwhelming. The pressure to recreate happier past holiday experiences can intensify feelings of joylessness and emptiness.

We will be speaking with Dr. Sarah-Jane about how to support your teen if they are struggling with their mental health during this festive period. This session discusses why anxiety is affecting teens today — from the increasing academic pressures of January and self-image struggles to the pervasive impact of social media. We’ll look at how to recognise when typical teenage stress may be shifting into anxiety that affects everyday life, and discuss practical ways for parents to offer support, striking a balance between encouragement and realistic expectations. We’ll also address how anxiety links to low mood and sleep issues, guiding you on which areas to prioritise in helping your teen through these challenges.
