As the festive season approaches, the pressure to be sociable and take risks increases for teenagers and young adults. While it is normal for teens to experiment and test boundaries, for those who are experimenting to find relief from feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, irritability, and negative thoughts, it can lead to quicker addictions and worsening mental health over time, particularly because their brains are still developing.

We will be talking to Fiona Spargo-Mabbs about how to guide teens toward making safer and smarter decisions regarding their drug and alcohol choices.


Underage Drinking and Substance Misuse in Teens

This session reveals how Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) appears in teenagers and effective therapies for overcoming intrusive thoughts and repetitive actions. Host Tara Dolby is joined by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Zöe Kindyis from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Dr. Kindyis, who specialises in OCD, will discuss what OCD is, its signs and symptoms, and how parents and carers can support teenagers in treating and managing the condition.

This session will provide an overview of how CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) works, explaining the Tier System that guides the levels of support available for young people with mental health difficulties. Parents will learn what to expect when seeking support, including how to prepare for initial assessments, what signs and symptoms CAMHS clinicians look for, and what happens after the first appointment. We will also cover practical advice for parents on how to support their teen in moments of distress and while waiting for assessments, and address how to manage feelings of fear and uncertainty. Finally, we'll explore what treatment might look like post-assessment and provide guidance on how families can cope together.
